Losing weight can control hypertensionOver half of overweight people can reduce blood pressure levels by losing weight, according to a new Italian study. However, it is important that the weight loss occurs before the person reaches outright obesity. The studyResearchers studied 210 overweight people who were close too but not obese. Obesity was defined as a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or over. They all had high blood pressure ranging from 140-159 systolic and 90-99 diastolic pressure. All participants were placed on a low calorie diet. After 6 months, those who achieved normal body weight also had a reduction in blood pressure. Conclusion"So, in the first stages of overweight, if we can induce people to reduce overweight, they can also avoid being treated for hypertension.", said Dr. Roberto Fogari, professor of medicine at the University of Pavia.
