Meditation controls blood pressure

An effective way of controlling blood pressure is through Transcendental meditation, according to a new analysis.

The Transcendental Study

Transcendental meditation is the name of a meditation technique practiced for twenty minutes twice a day while sitting with one's eyes closed and is said to involve neither concentration nor contemplation.

Researchers at the University of Kentucky, USA analyzed data from 9 studies on Transcendental meditation. In the trials Transcendental meditation was used as the primary treatment for groups of patients with high blood pressure.

The researchers found Transcendental meditation was associated with approximate reductions of 4.7 mm systolic blood pressure and 3.2 mm diastolic blood pressure.

Researchers conclusions

The lead author, Dr James Anderson said the findings showed significant reductions without drugs and their side effects.

Dr Anderson said, "Adding Transcendental meditation is about equivalent to adding a second anti hypertension agent to one's current regimen only safer and less troublesome."
