Home health tests kits on the rise

Research has shown that more people are diagnosing and managing their own health at home, as sales of home test kits increase.

The research

Patients are using home test medical kits and the internet to help diagnose the following conditions;

• High blood pressure
• Type 2 diabetes - blood glucose tests
• High cholesterol
• Fitness levels using pedometers and heart rate monitors.

The research group Mintel showed that the increase in home monitoring of health may be due to people wanting to be better educated about their own health and taking their health into their own hands.

Ms Richmond who lead the research said, "The internet has revolutionised the way in which people manage their health, enabling them to self-diagnose as well as monitor their own well-being."

She added, "People are better educated on health issues than ever before."

Mrs Richmond also told the Telegraph, "As the obesity problem continues to grow the number of diabetics will rise, resulting in increased sales of diabetes-related and self-diagnostic tests."
