A scientific statement published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation says resistance weight training offers heart health benefits.

The guidelines, updated from 2000 claimed resistance training increases factors in men and women such as;

  • strength
  • muscle mass
  • muscle coordination
  • bone density.

The American Heart Association website offers detailed recommendations to begin a resistance weight training routine.

Dr Williams who helped write the statement said, "Just like we once learned that people with heart disease benefited from aerobic exercise, we are now learning that guided, moderate weight training also has significant benefits."
