Memory fails for kinds of medication

In a recent USA study 40-60% of patients couldn't tell their doctors what medication they were taking.

Researchers in Chicago, USA looked at 119 patients with high blood pressure and asked them to name the pills they were on. The researchers compared their responses to what was on the doctors chart. Many weren't even close!

Dr Persell said, "Does it mean the patients are not responding well to the medication or are they not using the medication? Patients and doctors have to be in agreement about what drugs patients are actually taking."

Recomendations

The CityNews report made some suggestions which include:

  • Keep a list of the medication you are taking. Including brand and generic names.
  • Bring the list to your next doctors appointment for him/her to review.
  • Keep records and track what medication you are taking.
  • Don't stop or start medications because you feel better.
  • Always check with your doctor if unsure about the medications you are taking.
