Fat-free milk reduces blood pressureWomen who drink more fat-free milk lower their risk of developing hypertension, according to a new report. Women drinking more fat-free milk had higher levels of calcium and vitamin D than women who took vitamin supplements, as published in Hypertension the journal of the American Heart Association. The fat-free milk studyHarvard researchers studied the diets of over 30,000 middle-aged and older women. Women who drank two or more servings of fat-free milk each day reduced their risk for high blood pressure by up to 10%, compared to those who drank fat-free milk only once a month. Researchers conclusionThe researchers wrote in their article, "Our study found that intakes of low-fat dairy products, calcium, and vitamin D were each inversely associated with risk of hypertension in middle-aged and older women, suggesting their potential roles in the primary prevention of hypertension and cardiovascular complications."
