Health conditions increase hypertension risk

Nearly 75% of adults with conditions that increase cardiovascular risk also have hypertension. Even though about 75% of these people are being treated for hypertension, only one third to one half are reaching their blood pressure goals.

The study

Researchers at the University of California analyzed data from a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of 4,646 people.

They found that high blood pressure was found in most people who had cardiovascular disease and other health problems, including;

• 76.8% of those with type 2 diabetes
• 81.8% of those with chronic kidney disease
• 69.5% of those with stroke
• 71.4% of those with congestive heart failure (when the heart can’t pump enough blood to the rest of the body)
• 73.7% of those with peripheral artery disease (narrowed veins or arteries)
• 73% of those with coronary artery disease
• 76.9 % of those with two or more of these diseases

The authors wrote in their report that, "Poor control rates of systolic hypertension remain a principal problem that further compromises the already high cardiovascular disease risk in these individuals."

They also wrote, "These high-risk persons with low rates of hypertension control represent an urgent need for intensified efforts to achieve blood pressure control."
