Diabetic women are at higher risk of hypertension

Women with diabetes are less likely than men to have systolic blood pressure and cholesterol levels at recommended levels, according to a new study.

Women with diabetes were 5.4% less likely than men to have systolic blood pressure at recommended levels. They were also 5.9% less likely to have their "bad" LDL cholesterol under control.

Recommendation

Researcher Dr Ferrara said, "Women with diabetes should be more concerned about their risk of developing cardiovascular disease."

Dr Ferrara suggested that women with diabetes monitor and track their blood pressure and cholesterol levels to ensure they are in line with recommended levels.

The researchers added, "more intense treatment in women with diabetes offers the opportunity to reduce the observed gap between men and women with diabetes in the reduction of CVD (cardiovascular disease) mortality."
