New diabetic diet recommendations for carbohydrates

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has released for the first time a recommendation for a low carbohydrate diet to reduce weight.

The report

The ADA released its 2008 clinical practice recommendations for physicians. The guide suggests patients with or at risk of Type 2 diabetes reduce their weight by:

  • a low calorie diet, or
  • a low carbohydrate diet.

The report suggests sustained weight loss as well as increased physical activity for those at risk or with diabetes.

Ann Albright from the ADA said, "The evidence is clear that both low-carbohydrate and low-fat calorie restricted diets result in similar weight loss at one year. We're not endorsing either of these weight-loss plans over any other method of losing weight."

USNews reported "According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who have pre-diabetes can avoid diabetes if they lose 7 percent of their body weight and get more than 150 minutes of activity a week."
